This page is devoted to Old Spice talcum bottles and Shakers.  Talcum bottles were part of the original bottles in 1938 and had a distinctive design.  The original shaker was a silver metal can introduced in 1954 with a perforated top that permitted the talc to shake out.  Eventually the metal gave way to a few plastic styles in the 1960s and 1970s.

Talcum Bottle - Pottery

The earliest containers were made by A. E. Hull Pottery Company in Crooksville, Ohio. They were pottery and had a metal stopper.  All such containers bore the Ship Grand Turk between the words "Old" and "Spice" in red script. The words "Ship Grand Turk" appear in a banner beneath the ship. On the side opposite the ship, the contents are identified - in this case Talcum For Men.

  $9 Talcum Shaker - 1954 Gray Tin

This is the first style tin talcum shaker.  It was sold from 1954 until 1956.  The ship is gold and the American flag ensign can be seen off the stern. "Old Spice Body Talcum" appears across the bottom in red script.  The tin held 6 ounces of talc and has a sliding brass top that reveals small holes.  It sold for $1.00.

Talcum Shaker - 1956 Gray Tin

This tin is identical to the 1954 model except for the style of the ship.  It is red with white sails and the American flag ensign is missing.  It sold from 1956 to 1960 for $1.00.

$12 Talcum Shaker - Red Tin

I am estimating this shaker without absolute certainty between the original gray tin shaker and the first plastic shaker.  This would date it to 1959-1960.  It is made in England.

N/A N/A 1964 Blue Plastic Deodorant Talc

Around 1964 a Blue Plastic shaker labeled Deodorant Powder was introduced.  Except for its dark blue color, it was identical in all other respects to the 1960 Red Plastic Shaker.

$10 to $15 1967-1972 Burlap Texture Talc

Shakers of talcum were produced for about 5 years with a "burlap texture" to the container.  Shown here are a shaker of Regular Old Spice (red label) Burley talc (brown label)  and Lime talc (green label).

Lime Talc tends to command the higher price.

  $10 to $15 Talcum Shaker - Smooth Plastic 1973

In 1973 the shaker style changed again, this time to a more square look and the metal slider on top was replaced with plastic.  It held 5 ounces, and was sold until about 1980.  Several scents were sold: regular (red), Burley (brown), Lime (green), and the a deodorant talcum (blue).

  $13 Talcum Shaker - England

This talcum shaker was made in England sometime after 1981, based on the Old Spice logo.  Contents: 200 grams.

1984 Plastic Talcum

In 1984, the talcum shaker made its final change in appearance.  I do not think talcum is produced any longer.
