The Shulton Company was a master of advertising. In its earliest years, the packaging for its women's line of products incorporated functionality into the design, often providing secondary uses such as storage for household items, like stationary. Schultz launched his men's toiletries line in 1938 amid great skepticism. No reasonable marketing professional believed men would buy toiletries. Nonetheless, the history is quite clear. The advertising and marketing campaign used for decades to promote Old Spice products for men and women was remarkably successful. In the 1970s, under the ownership of American Cyanamid, Old Spice launched a long line of products designed to market the Old Spice product with unique and functional items. The number Old Spice branded items is remarkable and demonstrates the power of the product itself and the image created by its marketing genius.
